This is one of two covers of Sports Illustrated that I fell in love with this year. (The second belonging to the USA women’s soccer team).
Way to go Serena Williams, SI’s sportsperson of the year. Williams is only the tenth woman to receive this honor since its inception in 1954.
Williams is definitely at the top of her game so it’s no surprise the accolades just kept coming. She was recently named female tennis player of the year by the Women’s Tennis Association (fourth straight year in a row, seventh time overall).
She also won The Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) Sportswomen of the Year in the individual category. This marks her second win for that prestigious award. Her first came in 2000 when she won the team award with her doubles partner and sister, Venus.
Williams, a four-time Olympic champion, was unstoppable during the WSF time frame which runs from August 1, 2014 to July 31, 2015. Williams won all four Grand Slams, taking home her sixth US open title in September, 2014 followed by her sixth Australia Open title in January, 2015 and then her third French Open title in July, 2015 and her sixth Wimbledon title in July, 2015.
