Some of the more “popular” summer Olympic sports like volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, swimming and track and field have solidified their rosters. Are you ready? We are just 23 days away from the opening ceremonies, Friday, August 5.
Twenty three days to get your game-face on! So be sure to stop by G3 often to get some fast fixes on the women of these games. You won’t be sorry.
G3’s own Christa Harmotto Dietzen (#13) will be at it again as team captain of the women’s volleyball team. These ladies are going to be so fun to watch, they have incredible chemistry, talent (and leadership)! I love this video of them sharing what makes this team so special. Very cool culture indeed!
Next up, gymnastics. I remember vividly watching Gabby Douglas in 2012 as she wowed the world with her amazing abilities. At the time, I just so happened to be in her hometown, Virginia Beach so it felt even more exciting! She will have another shot along with newcomer and Gabby’s bestie, Simone Boles.
I had the opportunity to watch the qualifiers for the Track and Field Team. Unfortunately, Allyson Felix was edged out of the 200m race (oh, it was so close! She lost by one one-hundredth of a second-ouch!) but qualified to compete in the 400m race. Felix said on one of her social media channels, I believe it was Instagram, that she was disappointed but God has other plans for her. She is an inspiration to watch for sure!
Then there’s the women’s basketball team headlined by one of my favorite hoopsters, Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx and another WNBA star Brittney Griner (Phoenix Mercury), to name a couple. For the full roster go here.
Hitting the pool, the first name I’m going to be looking for is Missy Franklin. Though she didn’t prove stellar in the qualifying laps, she’s a force to be reckoned with. She is a four-time gold medalist in London, and is ready to drop the nerves and make a big splash. I’m also rooting for Katie Ledecky. For the full roster of swimmers, check them out here.
There is a full slate of sports in these Rio games that take place from August 5 to August 21, including archery and weightlifting among others. Go here to see what’s on the Rio menu!
