Way to go, Simone Biles! Simone really wowed us this past summer in Rio de Janeiro with a record-tying four gold medals and one bronze with a dominating US women’s Olympic team. She was nearly flawless and so much fun to watch. But now, being named female athlete of the year by the Associated Press?
You go girl!
This sweet 19-year old beat out such powerhouses as tennis star Serena Williams and swimming phenom Katie Ledecky in a vote that came out yesterday. You’d never know it if you have ever seen her interviewed! She is as humble and grateful as can be. And that smile can light up an entire room.
Simone is only the fifth gymnast ever to earn this incredible honor joining Olga Korbut in 1972, Nadia Comaneci in 1976, Mary Lou Retton in 1984 and Gabby Douglas in 2012. Talk about a sweet roster of gymnasts! This feat didn’t necessarily come out of nowhere though. Simone has been making her rounds in the world of gymnastics for sure. Going into the summer games, she had won three straight all-around World Championships.
