In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
-Matthew 5:16 NIV
This Bible verse says so much with a few simple words.
Let your light shine before others…That sure is a hefty sentence. Please don’t let it scare you.
What do you take that to mean? How do you shine your light?
For me, when I am thinking about what is good and right and focused on doing things that line up with God then my light is on. In my opinion, it’s not rocket science. Letting our light shine does not have to mean something so big or deep. It can be the things like:
- smiling at a stranger or helping out a neighbor
- being courteous to your family and friends when it’s hard
- calling someone by their name (read name tags)
- finding ways to be positive and happy in any situation
- listening more and wholeheartedly to everyone you come across
- being respectful of others and forgiving
You get the gist.
Of course, letting our light shine can also be the big, hefty things like utilizing our God-given talents in a way that is serving others.
For example, I just wrote an article about rejection. I wasn’t always that calm and cool about getting those rejection letters. It took some time but with God’s help, I flow with it so much more easily now. I’ve been at this freelancing game for ten or so years, I’ve had lots of practice.
But in the beginning, it took some getting used to. I’d agonize over my word choices or article angle and feel insecure. That nagging voice might come out to play and say, “You sure you’re cut out for this? It doesn’t look like you have what it takes. Maybe…”
Thank God I didn’t listen to that voice. My light would be dim.
I know and trust that I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing. I feel it. Every single day. I want everyone to feel that way too.
Do you want that?
It’s yours for the taking.
Given time and patience, all you have to do is keep praying. Believing. Asking- what are the little things you can do? What is that gnawing something that gets you thinking this is why I was put on this earth?
Chances are, you already know these things in your heart. They make you feel alive and happy. This is God’s call to you.
That they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven… how do we glorify our Father in heaven? Simple: when we are loving and being loved. Or when our light is shining and others see it. In many ways, it gives them permission to do the same. It’s a ripple effect.
God wants us to be free and happy. He wants us to love with our whole heart and give to our brothers and sisters. To encourage one another and be hopeful in his promise. With the help of Holy Spirit, we can do all these things and more.
It’s a promise for all of us. Not just a chosen few but ALL of us.
Are you bold enough to answer that call?
